Vatican City

Rome
The Vatican City is a landlocked enclave within the city of Rome. The entire state is about 44 hectares and it is the smallest independent nation in the world.

Here you can visit St. Peter's Square, which is just in front of the Basilica. This is where crowds congregate for masses said by the pope. The square itself is surrounded by many beautiful statues, 140 in total.

St. Peters Basilica is enormous, covering about 5.7 acres and a capacity for 60,000 people. Most papal ceremonies take place here because of its size and proximity to the papal residence.

Also located in the Vatican City and well worth a visit is the Sistine Chapel where you will see works of art that will blow you away. The most amazing is of course, the roof, which was painted by Michelangelo during the Renaissance and took up to four years to complete!
