St Peter’s Square is great place to hang out in Rome and a trip here wouldn’t be complete without seeing St Peter’s Basilica, which stands behind the square.
Located in the Vatican City, Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the square in the 17th century. It is sometimes known as Piazza San Pietro. Round in shape, its very spacious and was designed with large crowds in mind. Two enormous columns define the outline of the square. These columns are supported by four rows of Doric pillars that are 60ft tall.
You’ll find a 13th century Egyptian obelisk standing in the center of the square. This is the only obelisk in Rome that has not toppled since the Roman times - that’s a feat in itself.
This obelisk is made from red granite and stands 25.5m tall. This magnificent structure is supported on bronze lions and it is said that the gilt ball on top of the obelisk contains the ashes of Romes most famous emperor, Julius Caesar himself.
St Peter’s Square today can handle about 300,000 people and can be reached from the Ponte Sant Angelo coming up the Via della Conciliazione.
