Rome – know before you go:
Money –
- ·In Italy, as with most countries in mainland Europe, the currency is the euro (€)
- ·Most major establishments accept credit cards, look at their front windows for logos.
- ·ATM’s (Automatic Teller Machines) are known as ''Bancomat'' in Italy. They can be found easily in the city centre. Cards must have the ‘cirrus’ logo to withdraw cash.
- ·Tipping isn’t necessary in Italy, as the service is usually included in the restaurant bill and some restaurants even charge an additional cover charge that is added to the bill as well.
Business Hours –
- ·Shops and businesses usually open at 8.30am close from 1pm to 3.30pm and stay opened until 6.30pm.
Telephones-
- ·Public telephones are not that common in Rome due to the increased use of the mobile phone. When making a phone call in Rome, remember to always dial the area code and the telephone number even if you are dialling a local number. You can get hold of pre-paid phone cards at most newsstands, bars and tobacco shops.
Emergencies –
- ·Dial 112 for emergency
- ·Dial 113 for Polizia (Italian State Police)
- ·Dial 115 for Fire Department
- ·Dial 118 for medical emergencies and ambulance.
Visa/Passports –
- ·You can enter Italy as long as you have a valid passport. Check with the Italian Embassy in your own country to see if you need a visa.
When’s a good time to go –
- ·Probably the best time of year to visit Rome is in the Spring or Autumn, when the temperatures are warm but bearable. If you need to cool down anyhow, you can take a short trip to one of two beaches Fregene and Ostia.
