about rome

Rome is a truly magnificent city brimming with attractions and things to do. Known as the 'Eternal City', Rome owes its attractiveness to its historic past, which is matched by no other city across Europe. It was founded about 2,700 years ago and was once regarded as 'Caput Mundi' or The Capital of the World as it was the centre of the powerful Roman Empire that stretched from Mesopotamia to Britain.

The city is located in Lazio region about centre ways on the west coast of Italy. It's situated on the River Tiber between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apennine Mountains. The city's suburbs stretch from the city centre over 24km to the coast.

In the heart of Rome can be found the world's smallest sovereign state, the Vatican City. It covers an area of about 1 square km and is surrounded by the city wall which was built to protect the Pope. The Vatican City is the headquaters of the Catholic Church drawing people from all corners of the globe to St. Peter's Square, St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

Rome is scattered with monumental buildings like the Roman Forum, the Pantheon and the Colosseum, which are reminiscent of an era when emperors like Nero, Trajan and Hadrian ruled the Roman Empire.

There is just so much to see and do in this city that it's hard to get through it all. For good food and fashion, no other city even comes close.
